New Week, New Workout

Power 90

 

So anyone who knows me knows I’m always switching up my workouts which is good and bad. Good, because it keeps my body confused but bad because it affects my consistency which much of the time is shaky at best.

I’ve taken a stab at Insanity and P90X and while they are both great workouts and very intense, both tend to be a tad too high on the intensity scale for me. P90X to a lesser degree than Insanity but still very difficult. At their hardest, I barely complete half the workout. That is both simultaneously encouraging (because it makes me want to do better) and discouraging (because I dread how hard it is).

So I was surfing the web last night and I remembered Tony Horton (of P90X fame) mentioning a workout he created called P90X called the Power 90.

The commercial is a little cheesy, I know LOL :D

Looking For a Workout THAT WORKS?

No matter how much we would all like it to, you can’t get (and keep) the body you want without hard work.

Want some workouts that are guaranteed to kick your butt but get results? Try one or some or all of these on for size, at least one thing on this list will appeal to all tastes…

 

Bikram Yoga

If you like to hold a Yoga pose for an extended period of time, If you want to sweat like crazy holding that pose, than Bikram Yoga is your calling. Bikram Yoga consists of  holding 26 poses in a 107-degree heated room for an hour and a half.  Many Yoga studios will promote what they call “Hot Yoga”, but in reality it is just yoga in a hot room and not Bikram.   Certain poses require more flexibility, balance and strength.  As your flexibility, strength and balance grows you’re able to hold the poses longer and you’re able to attempt more advanced positions.

Bikram practitioners claim that the hot room allows the body to cleans and detoxify.  Bikram studios will often do what they call the “30 day challenge”.  People sign up for these challenges tying to complete 30 straight days of Bikram Yoga.

Time Allocation:  From my experience Bikram requires a significant chunk of time.  Plan on about 2.5-3 hours.  15-30 minutes to get to the studio and change, 1.5 hours to workout and 45 minutes to shower, cool down get to work or go home.

P90X (Do Your Best and Forget the Rest!)

P90X

You know, I’ve been on this diet journey on and off for a long time. I’ve gained and lost just to gain back more. I’ve had consistent workouts while having a bad diet and I’ve eaten great while my workouts sucked. Sometimes I read other blogs, and it looks like they have  weeks upon weeks of success and then I find myself wondering “What’s wrong with me?” Then, I think about the past year or so. I’ve only shed about 30 pounds in the past year, give or take a few, but I’ve completed a marathon and finally made it under 300 pounds.

This brief introspection leads me to the next phase of my lifestyle struggle…

Race Season, Insanity, Lent And Other Goings-On

This blog has been long overdue and I have so much to tell you. Where do I begin? I guess I’ll start with the exciting news first. Today, I am officially be starting this year’s race season! However, I won’t be running today or else I would have already laid down and gotten some sleep. Today, I  will be fulfilling the +1 portion of the 9+1.  I’m volunteering at NYC Half Marathon today!

When I did the 9+1 in 2010, I also volunteered at the NYC Half Marathon. Last time, I was at a water station somewhere around mile 10. Today I have a much cooler job: medal distribution! That’s right, I get to give out medals to the finishers. I’m very excited about that task I must say. And just like that, I’m on my way this year. My first actual running race of the year isn’t until April 22nd though. That will be the first of my 9+1.

Hey Doc, Where the Hell Have You Been? (#2 of 2)

So when we last left off, you knew what’s in store for me on the race front…but how do I plan to train for it? Well, I’m finally going to fully commit myself to the Insanity workout program. With this obstacle race coming up, I need to not only shed fat fast but I need to get my strength and cardio up too. Insanity will help get me there. I’m also going to be doing the Couch to 5K 3 times a week too. I want to be a faster runner, so what better way than to run fast! I’m about three weeks through it already. I’ll be starting week 4 of 8 on Monday. So three days a week, I’ll be putting in a 2nd workout. I may throw in my Perfect Abs DVD on the other 3 days I’m working out. It’s just an 8-9 minute but intense routine but we’ll see.

Alas, we move on to the topic of diet. How have I been doing on my quest to live a meatless lifestyle? 90% of the time I do great but I can’t say that I haven’t slipped up. I ate meat intentionally Thanksgiving Day and it turned out I didn’t even need it. It didn’t fulfill a deep need within me. After that I went about 30 days without, then I fell off for a few days. Old habits die hard. It’s not that I don’t want to give up meat after all but it’s not like I loathed it. I still love meat and how it tastes but I made the choice to give it up. I don’t regret my choice one bit either. It just takes a lot more discipline than I expected but I still want it, so I will have it. I have been eating meat the last few days, I admit. I’m giving up all junk food for Lent, which begins on Wednesday the 22nd,so with that I will restart my engine. I’ll do a fruit and veggie detox again and start all over like I did in November. It should be a great experience and I should also shed a few pounds in the process as well. I have to buy the fruit sometime in the next few days. The next few days will be filled with BAD eating. I already have planned for it. Perhaps not super bad but bad enough.

Hey Doc, Where the Hell Have You Been? (#1 of 2)

I know, I know. I’ve been MIA for over 2 months and before that over a month. I’m so sorry. I have had so much I wished to say. I just never took the time so sit down and write it. I even made a 2012 goal at the start of the year  to blog more and look where I am, right back to my old ways. I won’t make a promise to blog more again but I will commit to a valiant effort. Sounds like a cop out, I know, but the proof is in the pudding not in the words so I’ll aim to get my actions to overtake my words.

First thing, you may have noticed is that my weight/loss training blog now refers here. Why is that, you may ask? At one time, I had three blogs: this one, my training blog and technical blog. In addition to a bunch of social media sites from Facebook, Twitter and Google+ to Tumblr, Path, etc. Bottom line, I had and still have a lot going on. As far as my blogs, I already have my business and personal life split, I felt there was no need to further dissect my personal life into 2 more blogs. I’ll just let this one encompass all of this side of me. Now, those who don’t know me can get to know all of me on a personal level instead of just the me that works out and eats right (some of the time anyway lol). So the blog will keep a link that refers here for a while. Maybe in month or two, I’ll totally remove it. Maybe not, it’s not like Blogger is going to just remove it. No, they wouldn’t do that…would they?
